Mostly Murder (But Sometimes Not) is a podcast where four siblings loosely discuss mysteries and whodunits throughout a vast array of pop culture media. We love mysteries, and have since we were reading Boxcar Children and Nancy Drew by flashlight after Lights-OutTM. The endless detectives, investigators, and groups of roving teenagers who solve crime are all game for discussion on this show. It doubles as an excuse for us to hang out with each other—but also discuss murder!

We brainstormed and Googled and talked to friends and came up with an extensive and ever-evolving list of movies, TV shows, books, and more that can be considered a “mystery.” The loose definition was that a crime or similar incident happens, and someone tries to figure it out. This includes not only murder, but heists, vandalism, kidnapping, armed robbery, arson, and more. Detectives, journalists, PI’s, teenagers, children, Muppets—all kinds of “investigators” are included. The only real rule is that it be fiction, or at least fictionalized; movies inspired by true events are okay, but documentaries are not.

We put each title in a vintage mint tin and pick them at random, so we never know what’s coming up! Sometimes it’s something we’ve all seen and loved, and sometimes it’s brand new to all of us. We’ve got all kinds of options—your classic British period pieces, American crime procedurals, Victorian detectives, SoCal PIs…

There isn’t a major throughline, so feel free to skip around. We establish “Joke Bucks” pretty early on (you only get to make so many terrible jokes, MACK) as well as a segment calling attention to the disparity of gender representation in media originally named “Count The Penises,” which is now the “Patriarchy Bullshit Scale”. Each episode ends with a vague rating of the mystery involved from 1-10 stabs, as well as the entity as a whole.

**Please Be Warned**: This is a show that deals in crime and horrible events, however fictionalized they may be. We will talk about various forms of murder, abuse, suicide, etc. Episodes may have more specific warnings, but please be aware of the topic at hand and the subject matter inherent in the episode. The Silence of the Lambs will be heavier than Gravity Falls, Muppets are a lighter subject than Criminal Minds, etc.

COUNT THE PENISES STATEMENT

TW: We have a segment originally called “Count The Penises,” which was our way of examining the ratio of men to women in a piece of media and the discrepancies therein. This in no way indicates that people with penises are automatically in the “men” category or that people without one cannot be counted as such. It also does not mean there are only two categories. We generally take the gender presented in the media piece as a reflection of intent by the creators to create this segment. We support everyone in their individual gender identification and expression, and would never want a listener to feel excluded or marginalized by our discussions. In future this segment is called the “Patriarchy Bullshit Scale” (or PBS—get it?).
